Weekend PICKS: Thursday, August 25th thru Sunday, August 28th
It’s the end of August, and The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
We’re in the dog days of summer – and even the dogs are happy we seem to be past the incessant 100 degree heat. The weather this weekend looks just downright pleasant for Missoula’s River City Roots Festival, and all the other things going on…and there’s a lot.
There’s a plethora of cool car shows to check out. The big Flathead River Rodeo is happening all weekend in Polson. The fall semester getting underway at UM, and there’s a huge Griz pep rally happening Thursday at Scheel’s. And as the Clark Fork is starting to run a little low and slow, it’s the last weekend of free UM Shuttle Service for river floaters – get it while you can!
Farmers Markets season is in full swing in Western Montana. Huckleberries and Flathead cherries are current, and if you look for them – Dixon Melons! You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
We’re counting over 100 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go float! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

“The blues are the roots and the other musics are the fruits. It’s better keeping the roots alive, because it means better fruits from now on. The blues are the roots of all American music. As long as American music survives, so will the blues.”

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, MT
$10 // $15 Tour Supporter Ticket
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/snailmate-zenitram…/
Snailmate is the Phoenix-based musical duo composed of lyricist, singer and synth-wizard Kalen Lander and drummer and backup vocalist Bentley Monet. Together, the two create music that fuses synthpunk, grindcore pop, and nerd rap for an unpredictable and explosive sound. Formed in 2015, the band is known for their frenetic and impressive live shows.
Sarah Frazier is an Electronic/Pop artist from Montana. She dabbles in the realms of synthesizers and vocal processing, with 29 years outstanding of creating musical scores across a vast board of poetic, melodious, and instrumental genres.
Zenitram, Jr is a one man electronic dance punk multimedia extravaganza. A Zenitram, Jr performance can feature anything from T-Slice, The Marinara Flavored Flav breakdancing in a pizza costume to dancing nuns or a man reading the paper in his pajamas on an easy chair. Zenitram, Jr is performance art for people who hate performance art and music for when nothing else sounds good.
ModularHaze (Sam Kaley) would safely be described as dystopian/psych/synthwave. It’s a 3-piece group, Chris Bacon is the second half of the synth explosion and Chris Lee on drums. I also have a projector based visual synth that I use during our set for visuals. It is wildly trippy and provides quite the visual stimulation for a crowd.

Zootown Exotic’s Parking Lot Fundraiser
Zootown Exotic’s Rescue
1001 N Russel Street, Unit B, Missoula, Montana
Stop on by Zootown Exotics on August 27th for live paintings of the animals, art auctions, door prizes, car washes, and of course Donation Entry Tours of the rescue Facility! Where you can get up close and personal with over 40+ species of Household Exotic Pets! All purchases from the art and car washes have a percentage that will be going towards the Rescue!
Our goal with this Fundraiser is to help us begin the search for a larger Commercial Unit. If you’ve ever been by the rescue, you know we are short on room and have a lack of funds to change that. Currently our facility is around 1,700 Sq ft, and we would love to have around 3,000-5,000 sq ft. We had always envisioned bringing not only a rescue to Missoula….but an Open to the Public, Rescue Zoo comprised of animals with stories to be told. We are officially ready to begin our next step and bring this Rescue Zoo to life for our community and the animals who need it.

BOSS of the TOSS Cornhole Tourney
Sacred Waters Brewing Company
3250 U.S. Highway 2 East, Kalispell, Montana
Are you good enough to be BOSS of the TOSS? Every year the smack talk gets louder, the forehead sweat runs sooner, and the twitching of fingers ready to play cornhole just cannot be contained.
Bags, Baggo, bean bag toss, dummy boards, doghouse, dadhole, sacks, beans, beanbag, bean in the hole, ramps. No matter what you call it, let’s have some fun!!
If this sounds familiar then maybe YOU could be Boss of the Toss as this year’s cornhole tournament at Sacred Waters?
This game is for all ages and all skills. Sign up with your favorite beertender next time you’re in Sacred Waters and let the games begin!
Gameplay kicks off at 3:00 pm, but feel free to warm up those twitchy fingers and show up early. Enjoy some grub from Sacred Eats and try not to spill your beer!
We will crown a winner around 5:00pm, and the BOSS of the TOSS will take home a very majestic (yes, majestic) trophy. Top three teams take home prizes so play hard, my friends!

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 Advance // $12 Day of Show
To purchase advance tickets: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/no-fi-soul…/
No-Fi Soul Rebellion consists mostly of upbeat pop songs influenced by rock, soul, oldies, and punk. Mark Heimer conceived the project during the late Jay’s Upstairs era in Missoula’s underground music scene. At that time the project used an MP3 player inside a hollowed out guitar known as the “Soul System” to perform the songs as Glam Karaoke. The band is now a full on rock band performing old and new songs.
Cat Positive is an indie/punk rock band centered around the songwriting of Tyson Ballew. The band dabbles in Midwest Emo, Powerpop, and alt country sounds to bring earnest and plaintive story telling to the forefront of the project. The band released in 2021 a full length album called “The Star Thief” and will be playing songs from that album and Ballew’s back catalog on this run of shows.
The Western States is a punk rock band from Missoula, MT. The band just released their full length “Heavy Pours” in 2021. The album is full of anthemic songs featuring classic punk gang vocals and old school pop punk hooks.
