Weekend PICKS: Thursday, October 14th thru Sunday, October 17th

Ahhhhh, autumn!
The sweet spot of fall is up on us. While the recent cold nights and breezy days have dropped a fair amount of leaves already, this weekend remains prime time for fall colors and great fall weather in Western Montana. Remember the first blizzard and below zero temps we had around this time last year? Get out on the trails and enjoy the autumn we didn’t get much of last time around. Winter’s on the way, our recent mornings are all the reminder we need.
The MUG is here with all the happenings this October weekend around Missoula, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. Our own UM Griz Football carry their 4-1 record into Saturday’s home game against Sacramento State – GO Griz! There’s live local music all over the place – dozens of local music shows if you know where to look (right here!) Get out and enjoy our remaining late-season area farmers markets, bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing a karaoke song, or catch a comedy show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.
“Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, we have had our summer evenings, now for October eves.”
– Humbert Wolfe

Scream: The sleepy little town of Woodsboro just woke up screaming. There’s a killer in their midst who’s seen a few too many scary movies. Suddenly nobody is safe, as the psychopath stalks victims, taunts them with trivia questions, then rips them to bloody shreds. It could be anybody…

Cure
The Roxy Theater
718 South Higgins Ave, Missoula, Montana
Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s spellbinding international breakthrough established him as one of the leaders of the emerging new wave of Japanese horror while pushing the genre into uncharted realms of philosophical and existential exploration. A string of shocking, seemingly unmotivated murders—each committed by a different person yet bearing the same grisly hallmarks—leads Detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho) into a labyrinthine investigation to discover what connects them, and into a disturbing game of cat and mouse with an enigmatic amnesiac (Masato Hagiwara) who may be evil incarnate. Awash in a mood of hushed, hypnotic dread, Cure is a tour de force of psychological tension and a hallucinatory journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind.
New 4K restoration!
“This is one of the very best films by the extremely talented Kiyoshi Kurosawa [. . .] He’s an absolute master of light, framing and pacing, and he has so much control over all three that there are moments in his movies when the slightest gesture in the corner of the frame will send a shiver down your spine [. . .] Cure is his most terrifying movie. There are startling images and moments in this picture that will haunt you for a long time to come, and I suppose I should say that it’s not for the faint of heart. But be brave, because it’s worth it. Kurosawa is a major filmmaker.” — Martin Scorsese
“One of the films that have had the biggest impact on my own personal view of cinema [. . . ] There’s a sense of horror that trickles down your spine while watching it.” — Bong Joon-ho

Named the Next Woman of Country Music by CMT in 2018, and one of the top 15 country artists to watch in 2021, she brings a unique edge back into the southern rock scene. From festivals and rodeos, to country bars and honky-tonks, fans are giving themselves over to an act that writes from the heart and sings from the soul.

Ogren Park at Allegiance Field

Missoula, Montana
Tickets Link / Doors Open at 6:30 pm
Presented by Toyota, Matchstick Productions brings to you their newest creation, THE STOMPING GROUNDS. This action-packed feature explores the backyards and zones our pro skiers can frequent every day (sometimes with a little extra effort and ingenuity).
For decades, the pursuit of adventure, deep powder and massive spines has taken professional skiers like Mark Abma and Michelle Parker to the far reaches of the globe. As skiers, the desire to seek more and to escape is ingrained in our DNA. But that doesn’t mean our immediate surroundings don’t possess their own special treasures. Presented by Toyota, Matchstick Productions brings to you their newest creation, THE STOMPING GROUNDS.
This action-packed feature explores the backyards and zones our pro skiers can frequent every day (sometimes with a little extra effort and ingenuity). From a “born-and-raised” resort in Idaho to the spectacular Lyngen Alps just outside their hometowns in northern Norway, our skiers thrive in what’s familiar and find thrills in the unexpected. In the process, they manage to re-discover what is “home.” And home delivers in spades.
THE STOMPING GROUNDS features veterans and newcomers alike from the ski movie world;
Mark Abma, Rory Bushfield, McKenna Peterson, Michelle Parker, Karl Fostvedt, Tom Wallisch, Logan Pehota, Sam Kuch, Connery Lundin, Lucas Wachs, Banks GIlberti, Cole Richardson, Janelle Yip, Tonje Kvivik, Emil Childs, Adrien Grabinksi, Sam Cohen, Jay Rawe, Wing Tai Barrymore, Colby Stevenson, Hedvig Wessel, Nikolai Schirmer with Taylor Pratt, Lucy Sackbauer, Collin Collins and Trevor Semmens.

Haunted
University of Montana School of Theater and Dance
Montana Theatre, Performing Arts and Radio/TV Center
Missoula, Montana
The UM School of Theatre and Dance proudly presents an artistic and spooky twist on the traditional haunted house for its 2021-2022 season with ‘Haunted.‘ This walk-through design exhibition showcases four distinct environments that have been inspired by scary stories from across the globe.
‘Haunted’ runs in the Montana Theatre in the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center through October 15 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ALL patrons MUST be masked for the ENTIRE performance. If you do not wish to wear a mask, please do not plan to attend this show.
According to Professor of Theatre Mike Monsos, “COVID-19 presented a challenge to our design students, as most of our work moved online over the past year, limiting their opportunities to practice their craft. We found multiple texts and legends such as Dracula, ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ Baba Yaga, and Yuki-Onna, and challenged our students to develop a concept and design a room that the Scene Shop began constructing in Spring Term 2021. These rooms, which include lighting designs, costumes, and special effects, are an exciting way to see theatre design work in a new and unique way.”
Admission to ‘Haunted’ is $5 and can be purchased at the door. Audiences are welcome to arrive at any time between the exhibition’s opening time and 15 minutes prior to its end.

The former U.S. Marine is often compared to Randy Travis, the man who ushered in a new era and blew the doors off country music!

The Lighthouse is a 2019 film directed and produced by Robert Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Max Eggers. It was an international co-production of the United States and Canada, with the film being shot in black-and-white with a nearly square 1.19:1 aspect ratio. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson star as two lighthouse keepers who begin to descend into madness when a storm strands them on the remote island where they are stationed.
