Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 30th thru Sunday, October 3rd
And just like that – September’s done, and October’s begun.
The next couple weekends are looking prime for fall colors and great fall weather. Get out on the trails and enjoy the autumn we didn’t get much of last time around. There’s already frosty white crowns on top of our local peaks – snow and winter will be here soon enough. Not just quite yet.
In our humble opinion, one of the greatest movies of all time – The Wizard of Oz – is screening Thursday for Centerfield Cinema at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
It’s a First Friday night in Downtown Missoula, with gallery showings galore.
The 42nd Annual MacIntosh Apple Day on Saturday at the Ravalli County Museum in Hamilton (and the Liquid Apple Night following, of course).
Multiple Oktoberfests at local bars and breweries – we can almost hear the tuba bands warming up.
And as the weather begins to turn cooler, we’re seeing the resurgence of Trivia nights, and more karaoke than you can shake a microphone at.
The MUG is here with all the happenings first October weekend around Missoula, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. There’s live local music all over the place – no less than 50 local music shows if you know where to look (right here!) Get out and enjoy our area farmers markets, bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing a karaoke song, or catch a comedy show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.

$10 in advance or at the door
To purchase tickets in advance visit: https://www.zootownarts.org/…/rob-travolta-album…/346666 Rob Cave, also known as Missoula’s ‘secretary of bass’ (for supplying the most buoyant and delightful bass riffs for numerous local bands), has his own project — Rob Travolta — and they’re finally releasing an album! Rob Travolta will drop your jaw, with captivatingly composed tunes that balance Rob’s “Midwest emo meets Montana” vibe with drummer Cole Bronson’s knack for hip hop in smooth and enthralling pockets of groove. The talent and focus of the duo, not to mention the emotion they channel into their music performing, makes for a remarkable sonic journey of angst and joy. They’ll be joined by Mido Skip… and the hauntingly beautiful Wilma Laverne Miner. Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking.

7th Annual Missoula Monster Project
Zootown Arts Community Center 501(c)(3)
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
Show will exhibit at the ZACC and online (link to MMP online gallery TBA) through the month of October. We are so excited to present the 7th Annual Missoula Monster Project, in cooperation with Missoula County Public Schools Fine Arts Department, including Tiffany L. Miller, Monica Howie, and Norel C. Swanson.
Every school year, the Zootown Arts Community Center works in collaboration with the MCPS Fine Arts Department to produce the Missoula Monster Project, one of our most beloved annual events. Originally conceived by nine year-old Asa Smetanka, the Missoula Monster Project is always a collaboration between school children and adult artists. Kindergartners draw a monster from their incredible imaginations, and adult artists recreate these monsters in their own medium. This year kindergarten classes from Rattlesnake, Lewis and Clark, and Hawthorne schools have created original monster drawings for artists to reimagine. We love them all, and this year’s creative geniuses are in for a treat. Each child’s monster has been given to two adult artists, all of whom recreated the monster in their own medium. The kids will be able to see their monster come to life in multiple ways!
IN-PERSON GALLERY OPENING
Head over to the ZACC at 216 W Main St on Friday, October 1, anytime between 5-8 PM for the 2021 Missoula Monster Project Gallery Opening! Please note that masks are required for ZACC visitors at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking. Attendees may have to wait in line outside for their turn to view the monsters in order to maintain a safe capacity. The ZACC bar will be open and folks will be able to purchase beverages for their enjoyment during the event. The ZACC will also be open all weekend (as usual!), so feel free to stop by and see the show after the opening if you prefer a more private experience.
MMP VIRTUAL GALLERY
For those who are far away and can’t come to the ZACC for our in-person opening, don’t fret – the 7th Annual Missoula Monster Project will also be shoppable online! All youth and adult monsters will be viewable through a link on our website following the in-person opening. Some of the monsters will have been purchased by the time our online monster shop is live (as parents of youth artists always have first dibs), but many will still be available. We have a goal this year to FIND A HOME FOR EVERY MONSTER, so feel free to share the virtual gallery far and wide!
And of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the generous support of our wonderful sponsors. Their support this year is paramount. We are so grateful for their commitment to our community, to arts education, and to the power of intergenerational collaboration and creation.
